RTE LW 252 Reprieved

Irish national state broadcaster RTE is set to scrap controversial plans to axe its long-wave radio service, which would of saved the broadcaster  €250,000 a year.

The original plan was to see the service discontinued by May 2017, however due to widespread dissatisfaction expressed by the listeners of the service, the broadcaster is to re-review the decision.

The RTE long-wave service is very popular with rural communities, especially in Western Ireland, along with the large Irish community living in Britain, estimated to be over 600,000 people.

By postponing and reviewing the decision, it is hoped that listeners to the long-wave service will switch to digital platforms.
