Martin Butler - M1MRB & W9ICQ
Hi, my name is Martin Butler. I am in my late sixties, a family man with a lovely wife, three children (Colin, M6BOY is the eldest) and four grandchildren.
I started my work career working for Philips making colour TV’s and spent 10 years as a radio and television engineer. During this time I passed my City & Guilds exams and had my first look at Amateur Radio, however, I remained a Short Wave Listener.
Twenty years in the computer industry and in 1999 I was working with another contractor who was into Amateur Radio. We discussed the hobby and I ended up going to Brighton College to do my RAE. I passed my RAE in December 2000 and got the call sign M1MRB. I have been an active member of Sutton and Cheam Radio Society since 1999 and am now a committee member.
A group of us at the club wanted to start a training group in 2005 and I have now become the lead instructor.
I am a member of the Radio Society of Great Britain and the GQRP Club. My latest venture is working with Colin on ICQ Amateur / Ham Radio Podcast which I am enjoying greatly.
