A small band of radio amateurs have reinstated the repeaters at the RAF Stenigot site in the Lincolnshire Wolds.

The repeaters are MB7PA 6 Mtr parrot repeater, GB3LC 70cms Analogue Repeater and GB7JM MMDVM repeater, which is currently active on modes DMR and DSTAR.

Stenigot is approximately 500mtrs ASL and therefore has a very wide RF footprint, the repeater site is approximately 100mtrs from the chain home radar tower.

New multimode Beacon Network for South Africa

Following the successful launch of the 2 metre Bethlehem beacon in December 2019, the VHF Working Group has been investigating digital options so that a reverse beacon network could be established to monitor the various propagation modes, such as tropospheric propagation and others. The reverse beacon network will be able to send SMS alerts when an opening occurs. The current CW signal is not suitable for reverse beacon monitoring.

At its monthly meeting this past week, the group agreed to develop a multimode beacon network with next-generation beacons in Cape Town, the Karoo, and at the current Bethlehem site. The new beacons will transmit a digital signal, a Morse code signal, and a continuous tone that can be used for frequency calibration.

The estimated cost of the three beacons will be around R60 000 which will have to be collected through crowdfunding and donations. AMSAT SA, whose interest beside satellites, is also weak signal communication, has started the fund with a donation of R5 000.

Shannon Basin Radio Club Launch New 2 Metre Repeater

Shannon Basin Radio Club put their new 2-metre repeater into service on Thursday last from a site in North Roscommon.

The output frequency is 145.775MHz with the input on 145.175MHz.

A CTCSS tone of 88.5Hz is required for access.

The Shannon Basin Club runs well-supported nets on both 2m and 80 metres weekly.

On Wednesday evenings the 80-metre net is on 3.720MHz, plus or minus QRM and starts at 2000 while the group meets again on Thursdays on 145.350MHz also at 2000. Everybody is welcome to call in.
