I’ve always recommended that hams join the ARRL, but recent events have certainly tested my resolve. The ARRL seems to lurch from calamity to calamity. Earlier this year, there was the decision to discontinue sending copies of the print version of QST to members. Then, in May, there was a cyber attack on the ARRL’s shaky IT infrastructure.

The ARRL released a report to members on August 21st, 2024, and then posted it publicly on August 22nd, 2024, in reference to their IT security incident in May of 2024. I reviewed the document, and have some reactions to it, as well as some opinions on “opportunities lost.” A typical mental experiment I routinely perform is “What would I do if I was involved in the process.” Some of these are opinions I would have given the ARRL leadership if I was engaged with them on the Incident Response team.

The 2021 RAC Survey asked about the use of frequency band segments and hours per month devoted to each one. This identifies where Canadian amateur operators transmit to complement what type of communications they reported (see Full Report). The bands used and the amount of time per month reported by survey participants provide the contours of these behaviors in Canada. They also provide RAC with demonstrable data for the Canadian regulator as to how these frequency allocations are being utilized by the amateur radio service in that country.
