German Radio Hams Celebrate Morse Code Day

Each year on 27th April 2022 radio amateurs celebrate Morse Code Day

The date is not chosen at random. 27th April 2022 is the birthday of Samuel Finley Breese Morse, the founder of Morse telegraphy. In the 1930s, together with his colleague Alfred Lewis Vail, he developed a code consisting of characters of three different lengths and pauses of different lengths.

Although Morse code has largely disappeared from the commercial realm, radio amateurs still keep the art of Morse code alive today. Radio amateurs around the world meet on shortwave frequencies and indulge in telegraph radio communications or take part in CW contests. What counts here is speed, precision, physical fitness and an excellent understanding of the sporting world of amateur radio waves.

In 2014, Morse telegraphy was included in the nationwide register of intangible cultural heritage - the German Commission for UNESCO recognized it as an important form of intercultural communication that transcends time and space.
